The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 11:28 a.m., in room B45, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Rosemary Moodie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bernard, Boudreau, Burey, Cormier, Dasko, Mégie, Moodie, Osler, Petitclerc and Seidman (10).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Youance (1).

Participating in the meeting: Diana Ambrozas and Laura Blackmore, analysts, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 30, 2024, the committee continued its consideration of Bill C-252, An Act to amend the Food and Drugs Act (prohibition of food and beverage marketing directed at children).

WITNESSES:

Michi Furuya Chang, Executive Vice-President;

Pierre Savoie, Lawyer and Partner, LJT Lawyers.

Canadian Beverage Association:

Mark Dekker, Senior Director, Science and Regulatory Affairs (by videoconference).

Association of Canadian Advertisers:

Andrea Hunt, President and Chief Executive Officer;

Judy Davey, Vice-President, Media Policy and Marketing Capabilities.

Canadian Association of Broadcasters:

Kevin Desjardins, President.

Advertising Standards Canada:

Catherine Bate, President and Chief Executive Officer.

Michi Furuya Chang and Mark Dekker each made a statement and, together with Pierre Savoie, answered questions.

At 12:28 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 12:35 p.m., the committee resumed.

Andrea Hunt, Kevin Desjardins and Catherine Bate each made a statement and, together with Judy Davey, answered questions.

At 1:31 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
