The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:18 p.m., in room B45, Senate of Canada Building, the deputy chair, the Honourable Jane Cordy, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bellemare, Burey, Cordy, Dasko, Greenwood, McPhedran, Mégie, Moodie, Osler, Petitclerc and Seidman (11).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Ross (1).

Participating in the meeting: Laura Blackmore, Analyst, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, the committee began its study of Bill S-244, An Act to amend the Department of Employment and Social Development Act and the Employment Insurance Act (Employment Insurance Council).

WITNESSES:

The Honourable Senator Diane Bellemare, sponsor of the bill.

Canada Employment Insurance Commission:

Pierre Laliberté, Commissioner for Workers;

Nancy Healey, Commissioner for Employers.

Canadian Labour Congress:

Bea Bruske, President (by videoconference).

Unifor:

Erin Harrison, National Representative, Research Department.

The Honourable Senator Bellemare made a statement and answered questions.

At 4:54 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 4:55 p.m., the committee resumed.
