Anishinabe Elk in Algonquin Territory
Anishinabe Elk in Algonquin Territory features five red elk with large antlers against a white backdrop adorned with blue, yellow and red dots. Painted by Anishinabe artist Simon Brascoupé, the work portrays elk journeying through Algonquin territory in the distant past.
According to the artist, the painting is a meditation on the deep connection between the Algonquin people, the elk and the land, as well as “a vision of hope for the future”. The background reflects “the enduring presence of life and the natural world’s cycles.”
Born in Maniwaki, Quebec, the artist belongs to the Algonquin Mohawk of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation and has exhibited his work in Canada and the United States since the late 1970s. Through his art, which includes large-scale murals, sculptures and installations, he seeks to “increase awareness and recognition of Algonquin arts and culture within public spaces.”
