Dining chair
This dining chair was one of three hundred similar chairs ordered specially for Centre Block on Parliament Hill.
The original building was destroyed in a fire in 1916 and the chief architect for the new Centre Block, John A. Pearson, designed these chairs for the private dining rooms used by the Speakers of the Senate and the House of Commons, as well as for the parliamentary restaurant. The Speakers of both chambers often host special events and important guests who visit Parliament, including foreign leaders and diplomats.
The dining chairs were manufactured by Castle & Son of Montréal and feature a simple design. They’re all made of walnut wood and while they were originally upholstered in leather, they are currently upholstered in crimson and gold fabric.
In the Senate Speaker’s dining room, these chairs are placed around the large dining table.
