Dining table
This large dining table was commissioned specifically for the Senate Speaker’s private dining room in Centre Block on Parliament Hill during the building’s reconstruction after a devastating fire in 1916. The Speaker often hosts special events and important guests who are visiting Parliament, including foreign leaders, diplomats and Nobel laureates.
Made of walnut wood, the dining table was designed by John A. Pearson, chief architect of the new Centre Block, and built in the early 1920s by Ottawa-based furniture manufacturer R.A. Sproule & Co.
Notable dignitaries who have sat at this table include former United States presidents Barack Obama, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, former British prime minister Sir Winston Churchill and former Indian president Indira Gandhi.
Mr. Pearson commissioned three other dining tables of this style at the same time for Centre Block.
