Fall Hunting with Father

Fall Hunting with Father is a self-portrait of artist Agnes “Aggi” Ettagiak hunting with her father on Tapqaq Beach near Tuktoyaktuk. Commonly known as Tuk, the Inuvialuit hamlet is on the Arctic coast of the Northwest Territories.

At age 65, the artist began painting scenes that, in her own words, reflect cherished and sacred memories. Many of her works depict her upbringing and her education in traditional practices — hunting, drumming, dancing, sewing and storytelling — which she described as art in and of itself.

The artist had initially intended to keep Fall Hunting with Father within her family, but instead submitted it to the bi-annual art acquisition program run by the Indigenous Art Centre (Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada). It was through this program that the painting was shortlisted and eventually acquired by the Senate.
