The Honourable Daniel Hays, 2001-2006

The Senate commissions a portrait of every Speaker in recognition of the procedural and protocol importance of that role — a tradition that predates Confederation.

The subject of this portrait, the Honourable Daniel Hays, has been a prominent lawyer, Alberta cattle rancher and lifelong advocate for strengthening Canada’s ties to Japan.

Appointed to the Senate in 1984, Mr. Hays chaired the Committee on Agriculture and Forestry and the Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources. He was recognized by the Emperor of Japan in 2000 for his contributions to Canadian-Japanese bilateral relations.

Mr. Hays served as Speaker from 2001 to 2006 and retired from the Upper Chamber in 2007.

An Alberta, Mr. Hays is depicted in front of an imaged background with the Parliament Buildings and Rocky mountains.

The Speaker can choose the artist for whom they would like to sit; Mr. Hays’s portraitist was Canadian painter John Brocke. An accomplished realist painter from Alberta, Mr. Brocke’s life and career were tragically cut short in a deadly car accident in 2009.
