The Honourable George Stanley White, 1962-1963

The Senate commissions a portrait of every Speaker in recognition of the procedural and protocol importance of that role — a tradition that predates Confederation.

The subject of this portrait, the Honourable George Stanley White, served Ontarians and Canadians in Parliament for nearly 33 years. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 1940 and re-elected four times. As a member of Parliament, he championed legislation that sought to compensate Second World War veterans and help reintegrate them into civilian life.

Mr. White was appointed to the Senate in 1957. Named Speaker in 1962, his tenure only lasted seven months due to a change in government.

The Speaker can choose the artist for whom they would like to sit; Mr. White selected Kenneth Forbes, a notable Canadian landscape and portrait painter. Mr. Forbes served as an official war artist during the First World War and received the Order of Canada in 1967 for his artistic contributions.
