The official portrait of the Honourable Pierre Claude Nolin

The Honourable Pierre Claude Nolin, 2014-2015

The Senate commissions a portrait of every Speaker in recognition of the procedural and protocol importance of that role — a tradition that predates Confederation.

The Honourable Pierre Claude Nolin represented the De Salaberry division of Quebec in the Senate from 1993 to 2015. He served as Speaker from 2014 to his death in 2015. Before becoming a senator, Mr. Nolin had a long career as a lawyer and was involved in party politics. As a senator, Mr. Nolin was active in committee and parliamentary work. He was also dedicated to the role of the Senate, increasing the spirit of non-partisanship and modernizing the institution.

The portrait was painted by Marius Dubois, a Quebec artist who was influenced by surrealist and symbolist painters and the works of the Italian Renaissance. Mr. Dubois died in January 2016, about four months before the portrait of Mr. Nolin was unveiled in the Senate foyer.
