The Honourable Roméo LeBlanc, 1993-1994
The Senate commissions a portrait of every Speaker in recognition of the procedural and protocol importance of that role — a tradition that predates Confederation.
The subject of this portrait, the Honourable Roméo LeBlanc, P.C., dedicated his professional life to serving Canadians as a teacher, journalist, political staffer, parliamentarian and, ultimately, the country’s 25th governor general.
Mr. LeBlanc represented New Brunswick in the House of Commons from 1972 to 1984 and continued to serve the Atlantic province over a decade-long career in the Senate. Senator LeBlanc was named Speaker in 1993 and served in that role for a brief period until he was appointed governor general in 1994.
The Speaker can choose the artist for whom they would like to sit for their portrait; Mr. LeBlanc selected visual artist Bernard Aimé Poulin. Born in Windsor, Ontario, Mr. Poulin is renowned for his commission portraits of prominent international figures.
