Speaker of the Senate’s Desk

This kneehole desk was designed and built specifically for the Speaker of the Senate.

During Centre Block’s reconstruction in the 1920s, the building’s chief architect, John A. Pearson, designed the Senate Speaker’s desk to fit his overarching decorative plans for Parliament’s remodelled home. Constructed from walnut and ebony woods, the Speaker’s desk is the only one of this design manufactured for Parliament.

The desk is located in the Speaker’s offices in the Senate of Canada Building. Like most of the furniture in that suite of offices, the desk was purchased from Castle & Son, a Montréal firm well known for manufacturing high-quality cabinets and tables.
