Teasing the Fox

Teasing the Fox offers a perspective on the cultures and experiences of Indigenous peoples in Canada. The painting depicts a showdown between a fox and two rabbits on a snow-covered forest floor.

The story is based on a childhood memory of the artist. Sister and brother were asked to check on their snares and came upon the three animals. Together, the siblings scared away the fox.

Teasing the Fox is painted with the bright colours and bold outlines characteristic of the Woodland style of art. The painting was purchased by former senator Nancy Ruth, who donated it to the Senate in 2014.

The artist, Shirley Cheechoo, was born in Quebec and raised in northeastern Ontario as a member of James Bay Cree Nation. A survivor of the residential school system, she has used art, film and theatre to support her healing.
