The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 8:30 a.m., pursuant to rule 12-13 of the Rules of the Senate, to organize the activities of the committee.

[English]

Kevin Pittman, Clerk of the Committee: Honourable senators, there is a quorum. As clerk of your committee, it is my duty to preside over the election of the chair.

[Translation]

Senator Dagenais: I move that Senator Maltais be chair of the committee.

Mr. Pittman: It has been moved by the Honourable Senator Dagenais that the Honourable Senator Maltais be elected as chair of the committee. Are there any further nominations?

[English]

Are there other nominations? Is it your pleasure to adopt the motion, honourable senators?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

[Translation]

Mr. Pittman: I declare the motion carried. I invite the Honourable Senator Maltais to take the chair.

Senator Ghislain Maltais (Chair) in the chair.

The Chair: I'm ready to receive a motion for deputy chair.

Senator Plett: I would nominate my good friend Senator Mercer as the deputy chair.

[Translation]

The Chair: It has been moved by the Honourable Senator Plett that the Honourable Senator Mercer be elected as deputy chair of the committee. Are there any further nominations?

Thank you very much. Senator Mercer, you are the new deputy chair.

Before beginning the agenda, I want to say thank you very much to Percy Mockler, the former chair. He presided over this committee for the last few years and did a good job.

I also wish to say thank you very much to the other members of the committee who sat with us.

I want to extend a new welcome to my friend Senator Mercer. He was sick for eight months last year but has returned refreshed and ready for his battle with my friend Senator Plett.

It is necessary to adopt Item No. 3 on the agenda. Will somebody propose that motion?

Senator McIntyre: I so move.

The Chair: Is it agreed?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chair: Thank you very much. Adopted.

Senator Mercer: I so move.

The Chair: Is it agreed?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chair: Thank you. Agreed.

Senator Oh: I so move.

The Chair: Is it agreed?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chair: No. 6.

Senator Beyak: I so move.

The Chair: Is it agreed?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chair: Before we move to the next item, I wish to welcome Aïcha Coulibaly to our table for the next year. Thank you, Aïcha.
