The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 8:02 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Diane F. Griffin, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Dagenais, Doyle, Gagné, Griffin, Maltais, Mercer, Oh, Omidvar, Petitclerc and Pratte (10).

In attendance: Aïcha Coulibaly, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament; Marcy Galipeau, Communications Officer, Senate Communications Directorate.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference deemed referred by the Senate on Thursday, June 23, 2016, the committee continued its study of the Government Response to the Ninth Report of the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry, entitled: The Importance of Bee Health to Sustainable Food Production in Canada, tabled and adopted in the Senate on May 28, 2015. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 16.)

WITNESSES:

Health Canada:

Richard Aucoin, Executive Director, Pest Management Regulatory Agency;

Scott Kirby, Director General, Environmental Assessment Directorate, Pest Management Regulatory Agency.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Aucoin made a statement and, together with Mr. Kirby, answered questions.

At 8:52 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 8:55 a.m., pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 6, 2016, the committee continued its study on the acquisition of farmland in Canada and its potential impact on the farming sector. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 17.)

Pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera to consider a draft report.

That the draft report on the committee's study on the acquisition of farmland in Canada and its potential impact on the farming sector be adopted, as amended, and that the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be authorized to approve the final version of the report taking into account any changes discussed today; and

That the chair be authorized to table the amended report in the Senate, at the earliest opportunity.

At 9:12 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
