Introduction and First Reading of Government Bills

A Message was brought from the House of Commons with a Bill C-57, An Act to amend the Nunavut Act with respect to the Nunavut Court of Justice and to amend other Acts in consequence, to which they desire the concurrence of the Senate.

The Bill was read the first time.

The Honourable Senator Carstairs moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Pépin, that the Bill be placed on the Orders of the Day for a second reading on Wednesday next, December 9, 1998.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

Commons Public Bills

A Message was brought from the House of Commons with a Bill C-445, An Act to change the name of the electoral district of Stormont-Dundas, to which they desire the concurrence of the Senate.

The Bill was read the first time.

The Honourable Senator Rompkey, P.C., moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Hervieux-Payette, P.C., that the Bill be placed on the Orders of the Day for a second reading on Wednesday next, December 9, 1998.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted. A Message was brought from the House of Commons with a Bill C-464, An Act to change the name of the electoral district of Sackville-Eastern Shore, to which they desire the concurrence of the Senate.

The Honourable Senator Milne tabled the following:

Resuming debate on the motion of the Honourable Senator Butts, seconded by the Honourable Senator Milne, for the third reading of Bill C-38, An Act to amend the National Parks Act (creation of Tuktut Nogait National Park).

After debate, In amendment, the Honourable Senator Adams moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Corbin, that the Bill be not now read a third time, but that it be referred to the Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples for further consideration.

After debate, The Honourable Senator Carstairs moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Pépin, that further debate on the motion in amendment be adjourned until the next sitting.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

Reports of Committees

Consideration of the Seventh Report of the Standing Senate Committee on National Finance (Supplementary Estimates (B) 1998-99) presented in the Senate on December 3, 1998.

The Honourable Senator Stratton moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Kinsella, that the Report be adopted.

After debate, The Honourable Senator Kinsella for the Honourable Senator Lavoie-Roux moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Beaudoin, that further debate on the motion be adjourned until the next sitting.

A Message was brought from the House of Commons to return Bill S-21, An Act respecting the corruption of foreign public officials and the implementation of the Convention on Combating Bribery of Foreign Public Officials in International Business Transactions, and to make related amendments to other Acts,

And to acquaint the Senate that the Commons have passed this Bill, without amendment.
