Presentation of Reports from Standing or Special Committees

The Honourable Senator Atkins, Deputy Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence, tabled its ninth report entitled: Canadian Security Guide Book 2007 — Seaports.—Sessional Paper No. 1/39- 707S.

The Honourable Senator Atkins moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Murray, P.C., that the report be placed on the Orders of the Day for consideration at the next sitting.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

The Honourable Senator Day, Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on National Finance, presented its eleventh report (Supplementary Estimates (B), 2006-2007).

Resuming debate on the motion of the Honourable Senator Di Nino, seconded by the Honourable Senator Oliver, for the third reading of Bill C-16, An Act to amend the Canada Elections Act.

After debate,

In amendment, the Honourable Senator Joyal, P.C., moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Robichaud, P.C., that Bill C-16 be not now read a third time but that it be amended in clause 1, on page 1, by replacing lines 23 and 24 with the following:

"religious significance, a provincial or municipal election or a federal, provincial or municipal referendum, the Chief Electoral Officer may''.

The Honourable Senator Di Nino moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Oliver, that further debate on the motion in amendment be adjourned until the next sitting.

Resuming debate on the motion of the Honourable Senator Angus, seconded by the Honourable Senator Gustafson, for the second reading of Bill C-37, An Act to amend the law governing financial institutions and to provide for related and consequential matters.

Consideration of the fifth report (interim) of the Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages, entitled: Reflecting Canada's Linguistic Duality at the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games: A Golden Opportunity, tabled in the Senate on March 1, 2007.

The Honourable Senator Chaput moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Trenholme Counsell:

That the fifth report of the Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages entitled Reflecting Canada's Linguistic Duality at the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games: A Golden Opportunity, tabled in the Senate on March 1, 2007, be adopted and that, pursuant to rule 131(2), the Senate request a complete and detailed response from the government, with the Minister for the Vancouver-Whistler Olympics, the Minister for Official Languages and the Minister of Canadian Heritage being identified as Ministers responsible for responding to the report.

The name of the Honourable Senator Eggleton substituted for that of the Honourable Senator Hubley (March 21).
