Fast Fashion: Working Conditions in the Garment Industry – An interim report of the Senate Human Rights Committee
Ottawa – Today, the Senate Human Rights Committee tabled an interim report entitled Fast Fashion: Working Conditions in the Garment Industry which provides an overview of testimony to date.
“The collapse of the Rana Plaza complex was a wake-up call for many as to the human rights abuses faced by garment workers throughout the developing world. There are tens of millions of people employed in the global garment industry who do not have the full benefit of human rights protections. Our Committee started an examination of this important topic because Canadians are concerned with the way their clothing is manufactured. We believe this issue deserves further study.”
- Senator Mobina S.B. Jaffer, Chair
“Our Senate Committee wanted to gain a better understanding of what Canada is doing to improve working conditions, safety standards and prevent human rights violations in developing countries, countries that very much need the economic opportunities created by the garment industry. I believe Canada is heading in the right direction by encouraging Canadian companies to operate responsibly abroad.”
- Senator Salma Ataullahjan, Deputy Chair
