The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 11:00 a.m. this day, in Room 172-E, Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Leonard J. Gustafson, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: The Honourable Senators Anderson, Hays, Landry, Rossiter, Sparrow, Spivak and Taylor. (7)
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: June Dewetering and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Research Officers.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Howard Migie, Director General, Western Grain Transportation Review.
From the Farmers' Railcar Coalition:
Sinclair Harrison, President, Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities;
Arthur W. Macklin, Advisory Committee to the Canadian Wheat Board;
Leslie E. Jacobson, President, Keystone Agricultural Producers;
Terry Boehm, Chair of National Farmers Union (NFU), Transportation Committee.
Consideration of the budget application for the Order of Reference to study the present state and future of agriculture in Canada, followed by discussion.
Senator Gustafson moved -- That the Clerk of the Committee work with Senator Taylor and Senator Spivak to develop an order of reference and budget to study forestry issues.
The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
Senator Hays moved -- That the budget application be approved and that the Chairman be authorized to present it to the Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration for approval.
The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
Howard Migie from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada made a brief presentation and answered questions.
Sinclair Harrison made a brief presentation and he and the other witnesses answered questions.
At 12:35 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
