The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Leonard Gustafson, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: The Honourable Senators Anderson, Marchand, Rossiter and Tkachuk. (4)

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Forrestall and Stratton.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette and June Dewetering, Research Officers.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

APPEARING:

The Honourable Ralph E. Goodale, P.C., M.P., Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food:

Dr. Brian Morrissey, Assistant Deputy Minister, Research;

Dr. Art Olson, Assistant Deputy Minister, Food Production and Inspection.

Pursuant to its order of reference to study the present state and future of agriculture in Canada, consideration of issues as raised by the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

The Minister proceeded to make a brief presentation and, with Dr. Brian Morrissey and Dr. Art Olson, answered questions.

At 5:40 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
