The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 11:11 a.m. this day, in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Leonard Gustafson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Anderson, Maheu (for Hays), Rossiter and Pearson (for Whelan). (4)

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette and June Dewetering, Research Officers.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Consideration of Bill C-60, An Act to establish the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and to repeal and amend other acts as a consequence.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada:

Mr. Ronald L. Doering, Executive Director, Office of Food Inspection Systems;

Mr. Regis Bourque, DFO Representative, Office of Food Inspection Systems.

From the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada:

Ms Michèle Demers, Vice-President;

Mr. Luc Grenier, Negotiator.

Mr. Doering made a brief presentation and, with Mr. Burke, answered questions.

Ms Demers made a brief presentation and, with Mr. Grenier, answered questions.

After discussion, -- it was agreed to hear from the Canadian Federation of Agriculture March 4, 1997.

At 1:06 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
