The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 12:09 p.m. this day, in Room 172-E, Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Leonard Gustafson, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Anderson, Hays, Kenny, Rossiter, Spivak, Stanbury and Taylor. (7)
Other senators in attendance: The Honourable Senator Hébert.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette and June Dewetering, Research Officers.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Consideration of Bill C-60, An Act to establish the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and to repeal and amend other acts as a consequence.
The Honourable Senator Hays moved, -- That the committee meet in camera to discuss a draft report (12:12 p.m.)
The question being put on Motion, it was agreed.
At 12:34 p.m., the committee resumed public deliberations.
The Honourable Senator Spivak moved, -- That the committee proceed to consider Bill C-60 clause-by-clause.
The Honourable Senator Hays moved in amendment, -- That the committee not consider Bill C-60 clause-by-clause, but that Bill C-60 be passed without amendment, that the Chair report Bill C-60 today without amendment but with certain observations and recommendations.
The question being put on Motion, it was agreed.
The committee heard a brief account of the fact finding trip to Washington, D.C.
After discussion, -- it was agreed that the Chair would arrange for a Notice of Inquiry calling the attention of the Senate to the visit.
At 12:48 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
