The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 5:15 p.m. this day, in Room 256-S, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Tkachuk, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Tkachuk, Forest, Milne, Lavoie-Roux, Taylor (5).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament, Research Branch: Guy Beaumier.

L. Bruce Rowsell, Director, Bureau of Drug Surveillance, Drugs Directorate, Health Protection Branch;

Jean Peart, Manager, Hemp Project, Bureau of Drug Surveillance, Drugs Directorate, Health Protection Branch.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 4, 1997, the committee resumed the examination of the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1998.

Mr. Rowsell made opening statement, and with Mrs. Peart, answered questions.

The Chairman made a comment on the future business of the committee.

At 6:25 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
