The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met at 9:30 a..m. this day, in Room 356-S, the Chairman the Honourable Senator Comeau, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Comeau, Adams, Jessiman, Landry, Marchand, Moore, Oliver, Petten, Robichaud and Stewart (10).
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Claude Emery, Research Officer, Research Branch.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
WITNESSES:
From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans:
Michael Turner, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister and, Acting Commissioner, Marine Services, Canadian Coast Guard;
Gerry Swanson, Director General Habitat Management, Environmental Science Directorate.
Pursuant to its Order of Reference as adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, October 23, 1996, the Committee concluded the examination of Bill C-26, An Act respecting the Oceans of Canada.
Messrs Swanson and Turner made opening remarks in response to questions raised by the Canadian Shipowners, the Chamber of Maritime Commerce, and by Mr. Moreira, representing The Independent Inshore Lobster Fisher, on Tuesday last, following which they answered questions.
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Petten that Bill C-26, be reported to the Senate without amendment.
The question being on the motion, it was adopted.
At a later date, the Department of Fisheries will provide written responses to questions asked by the Honourable Senator Adams.
At 11:20 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
