The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met at 9:30 a.m. this day, in Room 520-VB, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Comeau, Doody, Jessiman, Petten, Robertson, Rossiter and Stewart (7).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Claude Emery, Research Officer, Research Branch.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans:

Jacque Robichaud, Director General, Resource Management Directorate;

Leslie Burke, Director, Policy and Economic Analysis (Maritime Region).

Pursuant to its Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 13, 1997, the committee began its examination of the questions of privatization and quota licensing in Canada's fisheries.

Mr. Robichaud made an opening remarks and with Mr. Burke, answered questions.

At a later date, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans will provide written responses to questions asked by the Honourable Senator Comeau.

The Chairman asked the indulgence of the members of the committee for a request he would make of the Clerk of the Senate to assure the prompt production of the transcripts of this, and all other Fisheries Committee meetings for this inquiry so that the evidence may be posted as quickly as possible on the Internet.

At 11:40 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
