The Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and met at 8:30 a.m. this day, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Kenny presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Carstairs, Cochrane, Cohen, DeBané, Di Nino, Forrestall, Kenny, Mercier, Milne, Nolin, Poulin, Rompkey, Stollery and Wood. (14)

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Bacon, Bosa, Hays and Prud'homme (4).

In attendance: Mr. Paul Bélisle, Clerk of the Senate and other Senate officials.

At 9:50 a.m., the committee proceeded in public.

Status of Official Languages Program in the Senate

The committee proceeded to the consideration of the document "Status of Official Languages Program in the Senate".

It was agreed that further discussion of the issue be postponed until proper documentation is available.

Budget -- Social Affairs Science and Technology -- Study on Post-Secondary Education

It was agreed that the budget of the Social Affairs, Science and Technology Committee for its study on post-secondary education for the amount of $47,000 be approved.

Budget -- Transport and Communication -- Study on Transportation Safety

It was agreed that Part I of the budget of the Transport and Communications Committee for its study on transportation safety for the amount of $144,625 be approved and that Part II of the budget, for the amount of $108,723, be postponed until the total amount allocated to committees this fiscal year has been reviewed.

Budget -- Joint Interparliamentary Council -- Fifth Annual Meeting of the Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF)

It was agreed that a request for a supplementary budget in relation to the Fifth Annual Meeting of the Asia Pacific parliamentary Forum (APPF) in Vancouver, in January 1996, for the amount of $11,502 (Senate Share) be approved.

Budget -- Foreign Affairs -- Study of Canada's relation with the Asia Pacific Region

It was agreed that the budget of the Foreign Affairs Committee regarding Canada's relation with the Asia Pacific Region for the amount of $127,845 be approved.

Committee Report Covers

96-11-07/72

It was agreed that Internal Economy Committee advise all Senate Committee Chairs that no funding will be provided for "special" covers for their committee reports.

At 10:40 a.m. the committees adjourned to the call of the Chairs.
