The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs, met this day, in camera, in Room 505, Victoria Building, at 10:42 a.m., the Chair, the Honourable Senator Sharon Carstairs, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Anderson, Beaudoin, Carstairs, Cogger, Doody, Gigantès, Hébert, Jessiman, Kinsella, Lewis, Pearson and Rompkey (12).

In attendance: Mollie Dunsmuir, Research Officer, Research Branch of the Library of Parliament; Laura Snowball, Research Officer, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 13, 1996, the Committee continued its consideration of the resolution to amend the Constitution of Canada, Term 17 of the Terms of Union of Newfoundland with Canada. (For full text of Order of Reference please see issue 19, Tuesday, June 18, 1996.)

The committee considered a draft Summary of Evidence.

At 11:30 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Anderson, Beaudoin, Carstairs, Cogger, Doody, Gigantès, Jessiman, Kinsella, Lewis, Losier-Cool, Pearson and Rompkey (12).

In attendance: Mollie Dunsmuir, Research Officer, Research Branch of the Library of Parliament; Laura Snowball, Research Officer, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 13, 1996, the committee continued its consideration of the resolution to amend the Constitution of Canada, Term 17 of the Terms of Union of Newfoundland with Canada. (For full text of Order of Reference please see issue 19, Tuesday, June 18, 1996.)

The committee discussed a draft report.

It was agreed - THAT the Honourable Senator Beaudoin be elected Acting Deputy Chair of the committee for the purpose of reviewing the final French text of the report.

At 3:55 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
