The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs, met this day, in Room 505, Victoria Building at 7:48 p.m., the Chair, the Honourable Senator Sharon Carstairs, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Carstairs, Doyle, Jessiman, Lewis, Losier-Cool, Milne, and Pearson (7).

In attendance: James Robertson, Research Officer Research Branch of the Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From Elections Canada:

Mr. Jacques Girard, Director, Legal Services;

Ms. Holly McManus, Legal Services.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, April 15, 1997, the committee commenced its consideration of the Regulations pursuant to subsections 7(6) and (7) of the Referendum Act.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Jacques Girard and Ms Holly McManus each made a statement answered questions.

It was agreed, -- THAT the committee table a report to the Senate stating that the Committee has reviewed the Regulations and finds them satisfactory.

At 8:08 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
