The Subcommittee on Post-Secondary education met at 2:00 p.m. this day in Room 215, Language Institute Building, University of Regina, Regina, Saskatchewan, the Chairman, the Honourable M. Lorne Bonnell, presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Bonnell, Forest, Lavoie-Roux and Perrault. (5)

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, June 19, 1996, the subcommittee resumed its consideration of the inquiry on the serious state of Post-Secondary education in Canada. (For full text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Subcommittee dated August 6, 1996, Issue No. 1.)

Dan Perrins made an opening statement and answered questions. Mr. Perrins tabled the following documents with the Clerk:

(a) Choices for a Saskatchewan Training Strategy, Consultation Working Paper, May 1996, retained as Exhibit No. 6050-2.35/P1 7 "19";

(b) Public Interest & Revitalization of Saskatchewan's Universities by the Saskatchewan Department of Post-Secondary education and Skills Training, retained as Exhibit No. 6050-2.35/P1 7 "20";

(c) The Report of the Minister's Special Representative on University Revitalization by Harold H. MacKay, Q.C., retained as Exhibit No. 6050-2.35/P1 7 "21".

At 3:55 p.m., C. Dennis Anderson made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 4:40 p.m., Bobbie Saga made an opening statement and together with Brendan Correia, answered questions.

At 4:15 p.m., David Milner made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 4:45 p.m., the meeting was suspended.

At 5:00 p.m., the meeting resumed.

Kenneth Kutz and Shaun Brennan made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 5:45 p.m., Marlene Brooks made a statement and answered questions.

At 6:00 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
