The Subcommittee on Post-Secondary education met at 9:00 a.m. this day in Room 215, Language Institute Building, Saskatchewan Indian Federated College at the University of Regina, Regina, Saskatchewan, the Chairman, the Honourable M. Lorne Bonnell, presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Bonnell, Forest, Lavoie-Roux and Perrault (5).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, June 19, 1996, the subcommittee resumed its consideration of the inquiry on the serious state of Post-Secondary education in Canada (for full text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Subcommittee dated August 6, 1996, Issue No. 1 ).

The Honourable Senator Bonnell turned the Chair over to the Honourable Senator Andreychuk during the Students' Roundtable.

The students made statements and answered questions.

At 10:30 a.m., the meeting was suspended.

At 10:45 a.m., the meeting resumed.

Preston Parsons and Elizabeth Carlisle made opening statements and answered questions.

At 11:40 a.m., Hoops Harrison made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 12:20 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, June 19, 1996, the subcommittee resumed its consideration of the inquiry on the serious state of Post-Secondary education in Canada (for full text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Subcommittee dated August 6, 1996, Issue No. 1 ).

Marjorie Brown and Jessica Peart made opening statements and answered questions.

At 2:25 p.m., Robert Chernomas made an opening statement and answered questions. Professor Chernomas tabled the following documents with the Clerk:

(a) Document entitled Japanese Economic Policies and Growth, Implications for Businesses in Canada and North America, which was retained as Exhibit No. 6050-2.35/P1 8 "21";

(b) Choices, a media conference article dated February 12, 1997, which was retained as Exhibit No. 6050-2.35/P1 8 "22"; and

(c) A newspaper article dated February 12, 1997 from the Regina Leader Post entitled Group proposes alternative budget, which was retained as Exhibit No. 6050-2.35/P1 8 "23".

At 3:10 p.m., Lloyd Barber made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 4:10 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
