The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples, met at 10:06 a.m., this day, in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Honourable Senator St.-Germain presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Andreychuk, Austin, Chalifoux, Forest, St. Germain, Taylor (7).
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jill Wherrett and Mary Hurley
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday March 26, 1998, the committee continued its examination of Bill C-6, An Act respecting to provide for an integrated system of land and water mangement in the Mackenzie Valley, to establish certain boards for that purpose and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.
WITNESSES:

John B. Zoe, Chief Negotiator;
Ted Blondin, Land Claims Manager; and
Rick Salter, Legal Counsel.
From the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development:
David Wilson, Acting Senior Negotiator, Dogrib Treaty 11 Claim.
Mr. Zoe and Mr. Blondin made a presentation and with Mr. Salter answered questions.
It was agreed to permit Mr. Wilson to answer questions from committee members.
It was agreed that the letters addressed to the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and to Mr. Jean-Yves Assiniuie from Grand Chief Joe Rabesca and the letters addressed to Grand Chief Joe Rabesca from Mr. James Moore, Assistant Deputy Minister, Northern Affairs Program form part of the records of the committee. (Exhibit 5900-1.36/A1-C6-8.6"3").
At 11:52 the committee continued its sitting in camera.
The committee undertook discussion of its future hearings on Bill C-6.
After debate, it was agreed that the committee meet in the evening of May 25, 1998, on the morning and afternoon of May 26, 1998 to hear witnesses on Bill C-6.
After debate, at the request of the Honourable Senator Taylor, it was agreed to hear the Mikisew-Cree First Nations on taxation issues.
At 12:02 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
