The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples, met at 10:09 a.m. this day in Room 160-S, Centre Block, the Honourable Senator Watt presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Austin, Berntson, Chalifoux, Gill, Losier-Cool, Mahovlich, St. Germain, P.C., and Watt (9).
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jill Wherrett
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday , March 31, 1998, the committee began its examination of Bill S-14, An Act providing for self-governement by the First Nations of Canada.
The committee undertook discussion of Bill S-14.
After debate,
The committee agreed on the following, that it will hear witnesses on the Bill at the beginning of February;
Issues raised in the Bill may be discussed by the Round Table for the special study on aboriginal self-government; and the committee will terminate its examination of the Bill by March 31, 1999.
At 11:20 a.m., the committee continued its sitting in camera.
The committee undertook discussion of its future business.
The Chairman distributed to members a proposed schedule of hearings for the special study on aboriginal self-government.
At 11:40 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
