The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met in camera, at 10:10 a.m., this day, in Room 160-S Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Watt, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Andreychuk, Berntson, Mahovlich, Pearson and Watt (6).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jill Wherrett; research staff of the committee: Rosemarie Kuptana, Coordinator.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, December 9, 1997, the committee continued its examination of Aboriginal self-government. ( See Issue No. 15, Tuesday, December 1, 1998 for full text of the Order of Reference.)

The committee discussed future business.

At 10:30 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Andreychuk, Berntson, Gill, Johnson, Mahovlich, Pearson and Watt (8).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jill Wherrett; research staff of the committee: Rosemarie Kuptana, Coordinator; Konrad Sioui, First Nations Specialist and Larry Chartrand, Métis Specialist.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, December 9, 1997, the committee continued its examination of Aboriginal self-government. ( See Issue No. 11, Tuesday, November 3, 1998 for full text of the Order of Reference.)

Mr. Gilbert Anderson and Ms Caren Buss made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 6:15 p.m., Grand Chief Andrew Kirkness, Chief Raymond Chartrand and Chief Dave Brant made opening statements and answered questions.

At 7:30 p.m., the meeting was suspended.

At 7:35 p.m., the meeting resumed.

Betty Anne Lavallée and Gary Gould made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 8:40 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
