The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 9:09 a.m., this day, in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Leonard Gustafson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Hays, Rossiter, Spivak, Stratton, Taylor and Whelan (7).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: June Dewetering and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Research Officers.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to its order of reference to study the present state and future of agriculture in Canada, consideration of the issues related to the NAFTA fast-track proposition.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade:

Michael Leir, Director General, United States Bureau.

From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada:

Phil Douglas, Deputy Director, Canada-US Trade Policy, Western Hemisphere Division, Market and Industry Services Branch.

Phil Douglas made a brief statement.

Together the witnesses answered questions.

At 10:52 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
