The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day, in Room 705, Victoria Building, Ottawa, Ontario at 5:37 p.m., the Deputy Chairman, the Honourable Senator Eugene Whelan, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Hays, Spivak, Stratton, and Taylor (5).

In attendance: Jean-Denis Fréchette, June Dewetering, Research Officers, Research Branch.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The present state and the future of agriculture in Canada.

Pursuant to its order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 18, 1997, the committee continued its consideration of global conditions concerning the present state and the future of agriculture in Canada. The Chairman or his designate is authorised to examine the present and the future of agriculture in Canada.

WITNESS:

From the World Bank:

Mr. Alex McCalla, Director, Rural Development to the World Bank, Washington D.C., and Professor of Agricultural Economics, University of California-Davis.

Mr. McCalla made a statement and answered questions.

At 7:04 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
