The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 4:10 p.m. this day, in room 160-S (Subcommittee Room), the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Leonard J. Gustafson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Hays, Robichaud, P.C., Spivak, Stratton, Taylor and Whelan, P.C. (7).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Mahovlich (1).

In attendance: June Dewetering and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Research Officers, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to its order of reference to study the present state and future of agriculture in Canada.

The committee considered the request of Dr. Losos to accompany the scientists on October 22. It was agreed that the committee decline the request and that Dr. Losos be invited to appear with other senior officials on October 29.

The committee considered its proposed trip to Europe on Farm Income and agreed to postpone until the end of January.

The budget was presented and the committee agreed to authorize the Chairman or his representative present it to Internal as follows:

At 6:22 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Pursuant to its order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 14, 1998, the committee continued its study of Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBST) and its effects on human and animal health safety.

Blair Stannard made a statement.

Shiv Chopra swore an oath.

Gerard Lambert swore an oath.

Margaret Haydon swore an oath.

Thea Mueller made a statement and, with Shiv Chopra, Mark Feeley, Gerard Lambert and Margaret Haydon, answered questions.

At 12:10 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
