The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Room 705-VB, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Leonard J. Gustafson, P.C., presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, P.C., Hays, Rossiter, Sparrow, Spivak, Stratton and Whelan, P.C. (9).
In attendance: June Dewetering and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Research Officers, Research Branch, Library of Parliament; David Newman, Newman Communications.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Mr. Michael N. Gifford, Director General, International Trade Policy Directorate;

Pursuant to its order of reference to study the present state and future of forestry in Canada, consideration of a draft budget.
The Honourable Senator Spivak presented a draft budget as follows:

The Honourable Senator Spivak moved, -- That the budget be approved and that the Chairman or an alternate be authorized to report the budget to the Standing Senate Committee on Internal Economy Budgets and Administration.
The question being put on motion, -- it was agreed.
Pursuant to its order of reference to study the present state and future of agriculture in Canada, consideration of the effect of international subsidies on farm income.
Mr. Michael N. Gifford and Mr. Jean Saint-Jacques each made a statement and, with the assistance of Mr. Garry Moore answered questions.
The Honourable Senator Hays moved, -- That the committee proceed in camera to discuss future business.
The question being put on motion, -- it was agreed.
At 11:42 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
