The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 9:08 a.m. this day, in Room 705-VB, the Deputy Chair, the Honourable Senator Eugene Whelan, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Hays, Robichaud, P.C., Rossiter, Spivak and Whelan, P.C. (6).

In attendance: June Dewetering and Frédéric Forge, Research Officers, Research Branch, Library of Parliament; Dave Newman, Newman Communications.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate

Dr. William von Meyer.

From the Human Safety Panel:

Pursuant to its order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 14, 1998, the committee continued its study on Recombinant Bovine Somatotropine (rBST) and its effect on the human and animal health aspects.

Dr. William Von Meyer made a statement and answered questions.

It was ordered, -- That the collection of documents respecting human safety data on rBST entitled rBST Milk Lacks Chronic Health Data and Metabolism Data: Diabetes Risk not Assessed presented by Dr. William Von Meyer be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the committee (Exhibit 5900 A2/SS-4, 33 "1").

It was ordered, -- That the book entitled Prediction, Prevention and Genetic Counseling in IDDM presented by Dr. William Von Meyer be filed as an exhibit with the clerk of the committee (Exhibit 5900 A2/SS-4, 33 "2" ).

At 10:58 a.m., the committee recessed.

At 11:04 a.m., the committee resumed.

Dr. Stuart McLeod made a statement.

Dr. Michael Pollak made a statement.

Dr. Shiv Chopra made a statement.

Dr. Michael Hansen made a statement.

Together, the witnesses answered questions.

At 1:31 p.m., the committee proceeded in camera to discuss the agenda.

A certificate was filed with the committee by the Honourable Senator Mira Spivak attesting to the importance of the evidence to be obtained from Dr. Leonard Ritter, Ph.D. on the investigation respecting the human and animal health safety aspects of rBST.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Mira Spivak, -- That Dr. Leonard Ritter, Ph.D., be summoned to appear and testify before the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry, on May 3, 1999, at 1:00 p.m., and that the Deputy Chairman be authorized to follow such procedures as may be necessary to communicate this order to the witness.

The question being put on the motion, it was agreed, on division.

It was agreed, -- That this decision be published.

At 2:01 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
