The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met this day, at 9:05 a.m. in Salon A, Delta Bow Valley, Calgary, the Chairman, the Honourable Michael Kirby, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Austin, P.C., Hervieux-Payette, P.C., Kelleher, P.C., Kenny, Kirby, Meighen, St. Germain, P.C. and Tkachuk (8).

Mr. Mark Milke, Provincial Director for the Alberta division.
From Investment Dealers Association of Canada:
Mr. Philip Heimbecker, Past Chair, Alberta District Council.
From the University of British Columbia; Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration:
Professor Stanley Hamilton, Associate Dean; and
Professor Robert Heinkel, Vice-Chairman, Faculty Pension Plan.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 12, 1998, the Committee proceeded to study the governance provisions set out in the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board Act (previously Bill C-2). (See Issue No. 8, February 17, 1998, for the full text of the Order of Reference. )
Mr. Milke made an opening statement and then, answered questions.
Mr. Heimbecker made an opening statement and answered questions.
Professors Hamilton and Heinkel made opening statements in turn and then answered questions.
At 12:10 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
