The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met this day, in camera, at 11:00 a.m. in room 505, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Michael Kirby, presiding.
Members of the committee present: Austin, P.C., Callbeck, Hervieux-Payette, P.C., Kelleher, P.C., Kenny, Kirby, Kolber, Kroft, Oliver and Tkachuk (10).
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament, Mr. Marion Wrobel, Research Officer, Economics Division.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, October 22, 1997, the committee resumed its examination into the state of the financial system in Canada. (See Issue No. 1, October 23, 1997, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)
The committee proceeded to discuss future business and reviewed draft reports on equity financing for small and medium-sized businesses in Canada and on Common Currency.
It was agreed -- That the Report on Common Currency: Canada and the United States -- Views and Evidence Heard, be presented to the Senate or to the Clerk of the Senate, if the Senate had adjourned.
It was agreed -- That the Report on Equity Financing be revised after further evidence was adduced. In the event of prorogation it was recommended -- That the Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce to be created at the start of the 2nd Session of the 36th Parliament present a motion in the Senate that the papers and evidence received and taken on the subject of Equity Financing during the First Session of the 36th Parliament and any other relevant Parliamentary papers and evidence on the subject be referred to the Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce.
At 12:45 p.m. the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
