The Subcommittee of the Boreal Forest of the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 7:08 p.m. this day, in Miramichi, New Brunswick, RCAF Wing, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Nicholas W. Taylor, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Robichaud, P.C., Stratton and Taylor (3).

In attendance: Ms Lynne Myers, Research Officer, Library of Parliament; Mr. David Newman, Communications Adviser.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference adopted in the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry on February 19, 1998, the subcommittee commenced its study to inquire into issues related to the harvest of the Boreal Forest and other matters relating to forestry which may referred to it from time to time by the committee. (See Issue No. 1, February 19, 1998, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

Ms Roberta Clowater, Protected Natural Areas Coalition, Endangered Spaces.

From the Eel Ground First Nation:

Mr. Steven Ginnish.

From the Northumberland Forest Products Marketing Board:

Mr. Albert Richardson; and

Mr. Jean-Guy Comeau.

From the New Brunswick Federation of Woodlot Owners:

Mr. Andrew Clark, President.

From the Canadian Federation of Woodlot Owners:

Mr. Peter Demarsh, President.

The Chairman made an opening statement and introduced senators in attendance.

Ms Clowater made a presentation and answered questions.

Mr. Ginnish made a presentation and answered questions.

Mr. Richardson and Mr. Comeau each made a presentation and answered questions.

Mr. Clark made a presentation and answered questions.

Mr. Demarsh made a presentation and answered questions.

At 10:10 p.m., the committee adjourned.
