The Subcommittee of the Boreal Forest of the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 5:00 p.m. this day, in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Deputy Chairman, the Honourable Senator Mira Spivak, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Robichaud, P.C. (Saint-Louis-de-Kent), Spivak and Stratton (3).

In attendance: Ms Lynne Myers, Research Officer, Library of Parliament; Mr. David Newman, Communications Adviser.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference adopted in the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry February 19, 1998, the subcommittee commenced its study to inquire into issues related to the harvest of the Boreal Forest and other matters relating to forestry which may referred to it from time to time by the committee. (See Issue No. 1, February 19, 1998, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

From the James Bay Advisory Committee on the Environment:

Mr. Claude Langlois, President (Department of Environment Canada);

Mr. Luc Bouthillier, Faculty of Forestry and Geomatics (Laval University);

Mr. Denis Bernatchez, Secretary, James Bay Advisory Committee on the Environment.

Mr. Langlois made a presentation and answered questions.

Mr. Bouthillier made a presentation, and with Mr. Bernatchez, answered questions.

At 6:45 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned.
