The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met at 10:00 a.m. this day, the Chairman, the Honourable Ronald D. Ghitter, presiding.
Members of the committee presents: The Honourable Senators Buchanan, Butts, Cochrane, Ghitter, Kenny and Taylor (6).
In attendance: Lynne Myers from the Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
The committee, in compliance with its Order of Reference dated Tuesday, November 25, 1997 proceeded to examine Bill S-6, An Act to establish a National Historic Park to commemorate the "Persons Case." (See Proceedings of the committee dated December 9, 1997)
The Chairman advised the committee that the Honourable Andy Mitchell, Secretary of State (Parks), has cancelled his appearance for today.
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Taylor -- That the committee postpone further consideration of Bill S-6, An Act to establish a National Historic Park to commemorate the "Persons Case," until further directions from the committee.
After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was -- Resolved in the affirmative.
The Honourable Senators Buchanan and Butts gave verbal reports to the committee on the CERI's Eastern Canadian Natural Gas Conference that they both attended in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on April 20-21, 1998.
It was agreed -- That the Chairman draft a proper mandate and organise hearings for the committee to Nova Scotia regarding the impact of natural gas on the Coal Industry in the area.
It was agreed -- That hearings be organised on emergency planning concerning the oil supply in Canada.
It was agreed -- That hearings be planned for 2 panels composed of Government Departments concerning the Act to accelerate the use of alternative fuels for motor vehicles (previously Bill S-7).
It was agreed -- That the Legislative Summary, as well as the briefs from the Public Service Alliance of Canada and the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, concerning Bill C-29, An Act to establish the Canadian Parks Agency and to amend other Acts as a consequence, be distributed to the members of the committee.
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Kenny -- That the corrected draft supplementary budget 1998-99 in the amount of $5,000 be adopted and that the Chairman or his representative presents it to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration for consideration.
The question being put on the motion, it was -- Resolved in the affirmative.
At 11:35 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
