The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met at 9:40 a.m. this day, the Chairman, the Honourable Ronald D. Ghitter, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Buchanan, P.C., Butts, Cochrane, Fitzpatrick, Ghitter, Lynch-Staunton and Spivak (8).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Gustafson (1).

In attendance: Lynne Myers from the Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From Natural Resources Canada:

Michael O'Sullivan, Surveyor General and Director; and

Peter Hammond, Legal Counsel.

The committee, in compliance with its Order of Reference dated Tuesday, May 26, 1998 proceeded to examine Bill C-31, An Act respecting Canada Lands Surveyors.

Mr. O'Sullivan and Mr. Hammond each made statements and answered questions.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Spivak -- That Bill C-31, An Act respecting Canada Lands Surveyors, be adopted without amendment and reported to the Senate as the third report of the committee.

The question being put on the motion, it was resolved in the affirmative.

At 10:40 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
