The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met at 9:00 a.m. this day, the Chairman, the Honourable Ronald D. Ghitter, presiding.

Members of the committee presents: The Honourable Senators Adams, Buchanan, Butts, Cochrane, Ferretti Barth, Fitzpatrick, Ghitter, Gustafson, Hays and Losier-Cool.(10)

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Kenny.(1)

In attendance: Jean-Luc Bourdage from the Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The Official Reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From Falconbridge Limited:

Dennis R. Prince, Director of Exploration Projects;

James Robertson, Regional Exploration Manager, Western North America.

From the Government of the Northwest Territories:

John Nagy, Wildlife Biologist.

The committee, in compliance with its Order of Reference dated Wednesday, June 17, 1998 proceeded to examine Bill C-38, An Act to amend the National Parks Act (creation of Tuktut Nogait National Park). (See Proceedings of the committee dated October 20, 1998, 9:00 a.m. for full text of Order of Reference ).

Mr. Prince and Mr. Robertson each made opening statements and answered questions.

Mr. Nagy made a statement and answered questions.

The committee, in compliance with its Order of Reference dated Thursday, October 23, 1997 proceeded to examine such issues as may arise from time to time relating to energy, the environment and natural resources generally in Canada. (See Proceedings of the Committee dated November 5, 1997 for full text of Order of Reference.)

It was agreed -- That the Report on the Committee's Fact-Finding Mission to Washington, D.C., May 31 - June 4, 1998, be adopted and reported to the Senate as the Fifth Report of the Committee.

At 11:20 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
