The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met at 9:05 a.m. this day, the Chairman, the Honourable Ronald D. Ghitter, presiding.
Members of the committee presents: The Honourable Senators Adams, Buchanan, P.C., Butts, Cochrane, Fairbairn, P.C., Ghitter, Gustafson, Hays, Milne, Spivak, Stewart and Stollery (12).
In attendance: Jean-Luc Bourdage from the Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
APPEARING:
The Honourable Stephen Kakfwi, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism, Government of the Northwest Territories
WITNESSES:
From Darnley Bay Resources Limited:
Leon La Prairie, President;
Ian Lawyer, Vice-President of Exploration; and
Bill Allen, Legal Advisor.
The committee, in compliance with its Order of Reference dated Wednesday, June 17, 1998 proceeded to examine Bill C-38, An Act to amend the National Parks Act (creation of Tuktut Nogait National Park). (See proceedings of the committee dated October 20, 1998, for full text of Order of Reference.)
Mr. Kakfwi made an opening statement and answered questions.
At 10:20 a.m., the committee took a five minutes recess.
Mr. LaPrairie and Mr. Allen each made statements and, together with the other witness, answered questions.
It was agreed -- That Ms Granskou, Executive Director, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, be rescheduled for the next meeting.
At 11:55 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
