The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 5:30 p.m. this day, in Room 356-S, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Stratton, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Stratton, Bolduc, Cools, Ferretti Barth, Forest, Lynch-Staunton, Mercier, Sparrow and St. Germain (9).

In attendance: from the Library of Parliament, Research Branch: Guy Beaumier.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Treasury Board of Canada:

David Miller, Assistant Secretary, Expenditure Management Sector;

Andy Lieff, Assistant Director, Estimates Division.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, October 29, 1997, the committee resumed its examination of Supplementary Estimates (A), laid before Parliament for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1998.

The witnesses answered questions.

It is moved by the Honourable Senator Cools, -- That the Chairman be authorized to present a report to the Senate on Supplementary Estimates (A), 1997-98, reflecting the comments and concerns of members of the committee.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 6:40 p.m., the committee proceeded in camera to consider future business.

It is moved by the Honourable Senator Bolduc, -- That the budget of the committee in the amount of $17,000 for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1998, be adopted.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 7:00 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
