The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 5:30 p.m. this day, in Room 356-S, the Deputy Chairman, the Honourable Senator Cools, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cools, Eyton, Forest, Ghitter, Kinsella and Moore (6).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Ferretti Barth.

In attendance: Mr. Guy Beaumier, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

APPEARING:

Mr. Ovid Jackson, M.P., Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board.

WITNESSES:

From the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat:

Mr. Mike Joyce, Director of Estimates, Expenditure Management Sector;

Ms Mary-Jane Jackson, Manager of Expenditure, Management Group;

Ms Shirley Siegel, Executive Director, Senior Level Retention and Compensation Classification and Excluded Groups Division, Human Resources Branch.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 18, 1998, the committee began its examination of the Main Estimates laid before Parliament for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1999.

Mr. Ovid Jackson made a statement and with the witnesses from the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat answered questions.

At 6:55 p.m., the committee pursued its business in camera.

It was moved by Senator Forest -- That the Chairman be authorised to present a report to the Senate on its examination of the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1999.

At 7:10 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
