The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 5:30 p.m. this day, in Room 505-VB, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Stratton, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bolduc, Ferretti Barth, Fitzpatrick, Forest, Kinsella, Lavoie-Roux and Stratton (7).

In attendance: Mr. Guy Beaumier, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

Lawrence F. Strong, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Senior Level Retention and Compensation.

From the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat:

Ms Shirley Siegel, Executive Director, Senior Level Retention and Compensation, Classification and Excluded Groups Division, Human Resources Branch.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 18, 1998, the committee began its examination of the Main Estimates laid before Parliament for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1999.

Mr. Strong made a statement and, with the assistance of Ms Siegel, answered questions.

At 7:00 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
