The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met this day at 9:15 a.m. in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chairman, The Honourable Gérald J. Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Butts, Comeau, Jessiman, Meighen, Robichaud, P.C. (Saint-Louis de Kent) and Rossiter (6).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Robertson.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on November 19, 1997, the committee resumed its examination upon the questions of privatization and quota licensing in Canada's fisheries.
At 10:45 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Mr. Jacques Robichaud, Director General, Resource Management Directorate;
Ms Julia Barrow, Resource Management Officer, Shellfish;
Mr. Max Stanfield, Chief, Resource Management, Resource Management Directorate, Atlantic; and
Dr. Howard Powles, Advisor, Invertebrates and Pacific Marine Fish, Fisheries Research Branch.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on November 19, 1997, the committee resumed its examination upon the questions of privatization and quota licensing in Canada's fisheries.
Mr. Robichaud and Dr. Powles made opening statements and then answered questions.
The Chairman pointed out that this was Senator Petten's last meeting, as he will be retiring from the Senate in January. He then acknowledged his contribution to the committee's work.
At 11:30 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
