The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met this day at 9:30 a.m. in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Gerald J. Comeau, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Butts, Comeau, Losier-Cool, Perrault, Robertson, Rossiter, and Stewart (7).
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Claude Emery.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Mr. Henry L. Surette, Director.
From the House of Commons:
Mr. Peter Stoffer, M.P.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on November 19, 1997, the committee resumed its examination upon the questions of privatization and quota licensing in Canada's fisheries. (See Proceedings of the Committee dated November 27, 1997, Issue No. 2.)
The Chairman acknowledged the presence of Mr. Brian Giroux, Executive Director, Mobile Gear Association of Nova Scotia.
Mr. Surette made an opening statement and answered questions.
Mr. Stoffer, M.P., made an opening statement and answered questions.
At 10:54 a.m., Senator Perrault replaced Senator Comeau in the Chair.
At 11:30 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Mr. Jacques Robichaud, Director General, Resource Management Directorate;
Mr. Ken Jones, Resource Management Officer, Resource Management Directorate; and
Mr. David Meerburg, Senior Policy Program Advisor, Anadromous Fish, Fisheries and Oceans Science Directorate.
Messrs Robichaud and Meerburg made statements and, with Mr. Jones, answered questions.
